Psychotherapy and counselling in English – personal, respectful and on equal terms
Finding the right therapist can be difficult enough. Finding someone you can talk to comfortably in English can make the search even more challenging.
I offer psychotherapy and counselling in English in Berlin for people who would like to talk about personal difficulties, relationship issues or challenging situations in their lives.
My approach is based on person-centred counselling according to Carl Rogers. I believe that a trusting relationship, empathy and genuine interest are important foundations for meaningful change.
You do not have to arrive with a clear idea of what needs to change. Sometimes, simply having a safe space to talk can be the first step.

English-speaking therapist in Berlin
English may not be your first language – and that is completely fine.
Perhaps you have moved to Berlin from another country. Perhaps you work in an international environment or have lived abroad for many years. Or perhaps English simply feels like the language in which you would prefer to talk about certain personal issues.
In our sessions, you can take your time and express yourself in your own words.
You do not need to speak perfect English.
What matters is that you feel comfortable enough to talk openly about what is important to you.
What can we talk about?
People come to counselling and psychotherapy for many different reasons.
You may currently be experiencing:
- stress or feeling overwhelmed
- persistent sadness or low mood
- anxiety or fears
- difficulties in your relationships
- recurring conflicts with your partner or family
- a major change or transition in your life
- problems at work
- loneliness or feeling disconnected from others
- uncertainty about an important decision
- difficulties adjusting to a new situation
- a feeling that you are somehow stuck
Sometimes there is a very specific problem.
Sometimes it is more difficult to put into words what is actually wrong.
Both are perfectly valid reasons to seek support.
Psychotherapy and counselling based on Carl Rogers
My work is influenced by the person-centred approach developed by Carl Rogers.
Three principles are particularly important to me:
Empathy – trying to understand your experience from your perspective.
Acceptance and appreciation – meeting you without judgement and without reducing you to a problem or diagnosis.
Authenticity – being genuine and honest in our conversations.
I do not see myself as someone who has all the answers to your life.
Instead, I see our sessions as a space in which we can explore what is happening in your life and what you really want for yourself.

A space where you can speak openly
Therapy is not about giving you a list of instructions telling you what you should do.
It is about creating a space where you can slow down, reflect and perhaps see things from a different perspective.
Together, we can explore questions such as:
What is actually troubling me?
What do I need?
Why do I keep finding myself in similar situations?
What would I like to change?
What might a life that feels more authentic to me look like?
You remain the expert on your own life. My role is to accompany you, listen carefully and help you explore what matters to you.
Relationships and couples counselling in English
Difficulties in relationships can become even more complicated when different languages, cultures or expectations are involved.
I also offer couples counselling in English.
Perhaps you and your partner are caught in recurring arguments. Perhaps you have lost closeness or find it increasingly difficult to understand each other.
In couples counselling, we can look at the patterns that have developed between you and create space for both partners to be heard.
The aim is not to decide who is right or wrong.
Instead, we can explore what is happening between you and what each of you needs from the relationship.

Family counselling in English
Family life can be challenging in any language.
When a family is living in another country, however, additional questions can arise. Different cultural backgrounds, expectations and ideas about parenting can sometimes create misunderstandings or conflict.
I offer family counselling in English for families who would like support in dealing with conflicts and improving communication.
The focus is on understanding the relationships within the family and finding ways of communicating with each other more openly and respectfully.

If you are new to Berlin
Moving to a new country can be an exciting experience – but it can also be demanding.
Building a new social network, finding your place professionally, dealing with cultural differences and being away from familiar people and places can sometimes leave you feeling isolated or overwhelmed.
Counselling can provide a space in which you can talk about these experiences without having to explain or justify everything.
How does the first session work?
The first session is primarily about getting to know each other.
You can tell me what brings you to counselling and what you would like to change.
You do not need to prepare anything in advance.
We can also use the first conversation to see whether you feel comfortable with my approach and whether working together feels right for you.
I offer a free 15-minute initial conversation so that you can get a first impression and briefly explain what you are looking for.

About me
My name is Martin Regener. I am a Heilpraktiker für Psychotherapie, family counsellor, couples counsellor and individual counsellor in Berlin.
I was born in Berlin in 1978 and initially trained as an engineer before I began to be interested in family counseling. Last but not least, the reason was my 4 children, who grew up or will continue to grow up after Jesper Juul’s ideas.
I have learned that treating people with equality in toddlerhood lays the foundation for a spirit of partnership during puberty. I find out every day what challenges a blended family offers and how fulfilling it is to master them.
My work is based on the principles of family therapy according to Jesper Juul, which are taught today at the ddif-Institute, among others.
My work is furthermore strongly influenced by the person-centred approach of Carl Rogers.
I believe that people need to feel understood and respected before meaningful change can take place.
My role is not to judge you or tell you how you should live your life. I want to create a space in which you can explore your thoughts, feelings and relationships openly and at your own pace.
